SUMMARY:President's Evening
DESCRIPTION:Ged Marshall will give a talk on ‘A Year in the Life of a Bee Farmer’ at this year’s President’s Evening. \nGed started beekeeping when he was 15\, spending two summers working for a commercial (3\,000 hive) operation in France. He got his first hives in the early ’80s and went full time in July 1989. He set up British Honey Producers Ltd. in 1995 with 2 others. Originally\, the focus was on bulk honey production but when varroa arrived in the UK\, Ged arranged\, with Brother Adam and the UK government authorities\, to take breeding material from Buckfast abbey to Tenerife and subsequently import the queens produced\, back into the UK. After several seasons of importing queens\, he moved over to home production (up to 2\,000 queens per season). Although the focus is still bulk honey\, the jarred honey sales are increasing annually. More recently\, his daughter Rebecca and her husband Kai\, have taken over the honey production while his daughter-in-law\, Riikka and her husband Tim\, have taken over the queen rearing. \nGed has worked in France\, Tenerife\, Denmark and at Buckfast Abbey with Brother Adam to gain experience and help improve his beekeeping. In February 2014 Ged was the first Bee Farmer in the country to be awarded with the status of ‘Master Bee Farmer’ through the licentiateship of the City and Guilds of London Institute. He reached the highest level in the art\, science and craft of bee farming\, accepted by the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers and the Bee Farmers Association of the United Kingdom. \nAs well as this\, Ged has served on the Bee Farmers Association committee for 12 years and in 2017 he was elected chairman of the board of directors. He worked on the Honey Working Party in Brussels\, becoming vice-chairman of the group representing all European beekeepers in meetings with the EU Commission. He has also served on the Bee Health Advisory Panel run by the governments Ministry of Agriculture and\, more recently\, was a member of the Healthy Bees Plan set up by FERA (Food and Environmental Research Agency). \nThe evening will commence at 7.30pm at the Apiary on Friday 20th November. The evening will include the presentation of awards. Please bring along a your drink(s) of choice\, for after the talk\, light food/nibbles will be provided by the Association.
